With his hypnotic voice, Abdelli brings
the ancient richness of his Kabyl heritage to every musical
conversation he undertakes. Kabyls are among the oldest tribal groups
of Berber culture - the original inhabitants of North Africa - who
range from the Canary Islands to Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to
Nigeria.
Abdelli journeyed nearly as far - for three years, over four continents - to weave his Berber songs in fresh collaborations with musicians from Cape Verde (with its Portuguese/Brazilian influence), Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Chile, Argentina, Morocco, and Tunisia. His unique approach, with producer Thierry Van Roy, was to provide each musical partner a simple pre-recorded vocal/percussion track as a rhythmic and tonal guide - but keep them unaware of what had been done elsewhere, so that each remained true to his cultural style as the album was reworked each time in an entirely fresh framework. Working in natural acoustic settings, in the heart of everyday life rather than in studios, further underscored the hues that merged into "a new musical colour" - and no one, including Abdelli, heard the final mix until all the recordings were completed.
