With a marvelous voice that easily commands pop repertoire - as she does with her group in Tashkent - young Uzbeki star Sevara Nazarkhan remains deeply rooted in Central Asian tradition. The familiar image of a female singer/instrumentalist in miniature paintings epitomized high culture across the legendary Silk Route - including exotic Bukhara and Samarkand, cities of modern-day Uzbekistan. Sevara's instrument is the 15th-century, lute-like doutar, also played on the album by virtuoso Toir Kuziyev. Through these evocative folkloric songs - accented and updated with samples, electric guitar, and keyboards - an ancient mystical heritage breathes. Produced by Hector Zazou, this debut showcases a stunning young talent in a timeless context.
